The Art of Balance #40 | Sergio d’Arpa, how will you cure?
The founder of the first digital clinic specialised in personalised predictive medicine is the 40th guest of the initiative “The Art of Balance / Pandemopraxy”, launched by Cittadellarte. Sergio d’Arpa explains how an adequate monitoring of our health through specific technological instruments – used by specialist doctors – can prevent a lot of illnesses: “Data relative to blood pressure, hours of sleep, physical activity and hydration levels recorded every day for three months… do you realise the amount of information available? Compared to a service of this kind, a doctor’s visit becomes an out-of-focus picture versus a high-quality video”.

How will you cure?
Taking care of yourself is simple, you only need to eat healthy and exercise. With telemedicine, people will be cured from home.
This is Lucy’s vision.
Lucy is an australopithecus that lived 3.2 million years ago. This could be its thought. Who tells you this story is an ancient being that has memorised two words more than you have and is making fun of you.
The future is much cooler.
I’ll tell you about it, since I’m building it. I’m Sergio d’Arpa and I’m the founder of Klinik Sankt Moritz AG, the first digital clinic specialised in personalised predictive medicine.
This is the future.

How is the future working today?
We have thousands of ‘smart’ things, thanks to the over-popular miniaturisation: artificial intelligence ‘stuck’ in smartphones, smart watches and smart anything-else-with-a-battery.
I’ll explain in practical terms to make the future real.
Let’s take a watch, a water bottle and a sphygmomanometer, that thing with a little pump you use to measure your blood pressure. 42% of the world’s population suffers from high blood pressure (hypertension).
It’s official: we are all pissed off.
By the way, when was the last time you’ve checked your blood pressure?
High blood pressure doesn’t seem to cause any problems because it doesn’t produce any symptoms, when in facts it disintegrates your eyes, kidneys, heart and brain. You know when you are at a funeral and you hear somebody say “we were playing football with him only the day before yesterday, he was a picture of health, and here we are, it’s written in the stars...”
What stars? It was written on the medical card!

Telemedicine is the other piece of technocrap. An old man being visited at home with a series on instruments for him not to have to travel.
This is not how telemedicine works!
Let’s go back to the ingredients of this story: high blood pressure, miniaturisation, artificial intelligence, telemedicine, a smart watch, a water bottle and a sphygmomanometer.
I suffer from high blood pressure, a chronic illness, I have to take a pill every day.
I work, get angry, run, jump on planes, sleep only a few hours a night; stress, work, travelling.
My doctor sees me a couple of times a year if that.
He checks my blood pressure and asks me – as everybody else – two things, the same every time:
1) Are you taking your pill?
2) When are you going to go on a diet?
I leave the surgery and after three months: “we were playing football with him only the day before yesterday, he was a picture of health, and here we are, it’s written in the stars…
Whereas the future is today.

Apple smart watch
– Heart check, atrial fibrillation alarm.
– Hours of sleep.
– Consumed calories.
– Steps taken, stairs climbed.
– Over a million apps you can install, thousands of which are health related.

Bluetooth Water Bottle
– Quantity of water drunk.
– Visual alarm: the water bottle lights up as a reminder that it’s time to drink.
– Assessment of your needs.

Bluetooth Sphygmomanometer
– Bracelet only, no tubes, rechargeable USB battery.
– It inflates on its own.
– It measures blood pressure.
– It registers the sound of the heartbeat.
– It analyses the chart.
– It alerts to atrial fibrillation

What’s the point of yearly check-ups with your doctor when you have all these data recorded on you smartphone?
A yearly check-up doesn’t save your life. Data relative to blood pressure, hours of sleep, physical activity and hydration levels recorded every day for three months… do you realise the amount of information available?
Compared to a service of this kind, a doctor’s visit becomes an out-of-focus picture versus a high-quality video.
Imagine now the existence of a digital clinic gathering all these data and alerting our doctors to possible negative trends through systems of artificial intelligence.
In theory, you’re never going to die.

This is of course not possible, but we do reduce the risk of you dying by over 90%.
As simple as that.
Lifestyles are necessary for a better and longer life, but they don’t alert you to possible risks.
The future is simple. If salt consumption is a problem for hypertensive, it’s important to stay hydrated. The water bottle only is a fantastic instrument that sets you back less than 100 dollars.
This example relative to blood pressure is only the access gate into our clinic of the future.
We supply our e-St. Morizter, a digital regular of St. Moritz, with an iPhone; all the data gathered by the various apps are then transferred to our super servers, secured with NATO systems. It’s our mission control, where doctors affiliated with our clinic, with degrees certified on the Bitcoin blockchain, access the data and visit the patients.
We are the only clinic in the world to have a propriety writing system on a public blockchain.

Thanks for following me so far, but this is only a taste of the future. Let me now tell you about the other instruments we have in store for you:
– a device that checks the amount of nitrogen in your breath to verify what foods are less suitable for you;
– a band to place under your bed sheet that registers your hours of sleep, heartbeat, temperature and humidity;
– a band to place under your mattress that checks on sleep apnoea;
– a sensor to place on your neck that controls your posture and solves 90% of your back problems;
– a scale that calculates the weight of your bones, of your fat mass, BMI, heartbeat and recommended daily amount of steps to take to keep fit;
– a Bluetooth toothbrush that verifies the places where you haven’t brushed and the brushing time;
– a little box that details through to your smartphone the exercising you’re supposed to carry out and verifies that you’ve actually exercised using infrared technology;
– a neuronal transmitter that strengthens your body and makes it faster, e.g. you learn to play the piano in 70% less time;
– an enhanced oximeter that tests your blood without using a needle: hematocrit and hemoglobin.

Combining these data with genetic and metabolomic analyses, we can predict any negative trends before they actually lead to unwanted consequences.
You’d practically be wearing the telemetry of a space rocket, and you can be not only healthier, but also stronger and faster, at any age.
All this under the medical supervision of the most brilliant doctors on the planet.
Should any research by any university in this galaxy reveal new risk factors, in less than 8 seconds we can identify all the interested subjects and in less than 4 hours we can implement new correctives.

And what about tomorrow?
With over half a million health apps, hundreds on hydration only, and thousands of new wearable devices coming out, I don’t think we’ll get bored at Klinik Sankt Moritz.
This is the future of how you will take care of yourself.
Not everybody can afford iPhone and relative devices combined with the supervision of a doctor, but most of them can be bought singularly and managed autonomously; it’s not the same thing, but you will still have at your disposal many more data than you have today.
Welcome to the true 2020!
