What language will you speak?
I would answer that we will speak the language of empathy, the one of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. These months of fear and isolation, due to a virus come from a distant place, have made us understand that everything that happens has planetary repercussions and might affect us even if it happens far away from us.
Nobody lives on happy islands: we can pretend that what happens to others doesn’t interest us, but sooner or later what happens in the world will affect us, the way it’s been in the past few months. For these reasons, I think that the time has come for us to show that ‘the others’ interest us, that we care about how they live, what they eat, how they produce, how they take care of themselves…
We can’t keep relying on the privileges of our geographical location, because they can be jeopardised at any moment. It’s time to act for a new humanity, one born of our ability to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, which might after all be our own. A new humanity that in Palazzolo, where I live, has found in the Third Paradise an opportunity to bring together women from different stories, religions and cultures; women who share moments in which they contribute to each other’s knowledge and growth, the Women of the Third Paradise.
